Which one of those people marching off to pick tea is you? Just kidding. I bet this is back breaking work and maybe not as interesting for the locals as us westerners think it is.

You can read a translation of a folk song from the first half of the twentieth century about the privations of tea harvest on page 44 of Harvesting Mountains by Robert Gardella. The hardest work was done mostly by people from neighboring areas (Jiangxi.)

After qingming at the time of the grain rains,
We heft our bundles to go to Fujian.
It's really pitiful to think of Fujian.
Our food's a half-bowl of salt-greens and a half bowl of salt.
Early one morning we return to Jiangxi,
To eat bowls of good greens all year.
Gardella cites Lin Fuquan 1943, p.82. and in his footnote he writes, "Lin produced a sampling of 15 out of over a hundred tea workers' folk songs he collected in the course of three years' residence in the Wuyi region; most express bitter resignation regarding working conditions, pay, and food."

I knew it! I think we westerners have a more romanticised image of tea picking and processing, but somewhere in the back of mind I knew this had to be mundane and laborious. Bless them for they know not how much I appreciate the fruits of their labor.

Unfortunately, I haven't got any yet! I'm not going to Wuyi until July because it takes 12 hours to get there by bus. (only about 160 km as the crow flies!)

I could take a plane, but I would have to change planes in Fuzhou or Shanghai, and I'm not going to take two plane rides to go 160km.
